Nov. 7, 2024 FORT WAYNE, Ind.—The University of Saint Francis proudly announces the addition of Indiana’s first collegiate-level women’s flag football program, with the Cougars beginning play in spring 2026.
Saint Francis’ program will be considered a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Emerging Sport. Twenty-five NAIA schools have implemented women’s flag football programs, with more to come. A minimum of 40 schools and NAIA final approval will be required for women’s flag football to become a NAIA championship sport. Saint Francis’ program will also be the first among Crossroads League members.
“We are excited to be the first university in Indiana to announce the launch of women’s flag football,” Saint Francis Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Kelsey Passaglia said. “This is a perfect time, given the growth of the sport, to provide another opportunity for female athletes to continue their education while competing in flag football. The support, enthusiasm and partnerships from surrounding high schools and clubs has been overwhelmingly positive.”
Saint Francis will conduct a national search for a head coach and begin recruiting players immediately. Saint Francis women’s flag football will debut in spring 2026 and games will be played at Bishop D’Arcy Stadium. Women’s flag football is a 7-on-7 sport played on a 40-yard by 80-yard field. The season runs from February through May.
Last year’s college championship women’s flag football competition was held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The sport will be part of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
