The University of Saint Francis will celebrate renowned American artist Jim Dine with an art exhibition, the President’s Art Gala and a Closer Look Lecture.
Dine, 87, rose to prominence as a performance artist with the “Happenings,” which also linked him to the establishment of pop art. Since the 1970s, he has defied categorization and created a body of work that includes drawings, paintings, photographs, assemblages and sculpture. He has collaborated with master printmakers and created over 3,000 unique prints. The exhibition will include prints by Dine that span more than six decades.
Here are the upcoming events celebrating Dine’s unique talent and contribution to art:
Jim Dine Exhibition: “Vocabulary of Metaphors”
August 15 through October 23
Location: Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center (located off Leesburg Road on the southeast side of USF campus, 2701 Spring Street)
Gallery hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday (Closed Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 3 to 5)
The “Vocabulary of Metaphors” exhibition will display a broad history of Dine’s prints—spanning over six decades. A special feature of this exhibition will include Dine’s self-portraits in relationship to current portraits that USF students created from studying Dine’s work. USF Creative Arts thanks the following lenders to this exhibition: Kennedy Museum of Art (Ohio University), Fort Wayne Museum of Art and the Midwest Museum of American Art.
President’s Art Gala
Saturday, September 10, 6 to 9 p.m.
Location: Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center
The 2022 USF President’s Art Gala will be an evening to celebrate the work of Dine. The gala is presented by the University of Saint Francis, USF President Rev. Dr. Eric Albert Zimmer and USF Creative Arts. USF Gallery Director Justin Johnson will present a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m., prior to the start of the gala, highlighting the major works in the exhibition. The gala is free and open to the public and will include live music, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
Closer Look Lecture Series
Wednesday, September 28, 6 p.m.
Location: USF North Campus Auditorium, 2702 Spring Street
Dr. Andria Derstine, the John G. W. Cowles Director of the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, will present a lecture on Dine’s artistic practice. Dine presented his first solo exhibition in 1965 at the Allen, and he has continued to partner with the institution—including a retrospective exhibition of drawings in 2005 and a residency and installation in 2015.
