FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Transfer and current sophomore and junior students pursuing higher education degrees with a non-medical emphasis in biology, environmental science, computer science and chemistry fields may continue to apply for the Roger Bacon Scholarship at the University of Saint Francis.
The National Science Foundation approved a one-year S-STEM grant extension of the scholarship for the USF School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, taking it through March 2021.
In addition to receiving up to a $10,000 scholarship award per year, Roger Bacon Scholars build foundational networks by forming relationships with local industry through site visitations and seminars. Roger Bacon Scholars also work with industry mentors in research of current issues. Roger Bacon was a 13th century English philosopher and Franciscan friar who emphasized the empirical study of nature.
Applications are being reviewed as received until all scholarships are offered. Applications require a personal statement and an overall GPA of 3.25 and a STEM GPA of 3.0. Students may apply by contacting Paul Schmidt at 260-399-7700, ext. 8220, or email pschmidt@sf.edu.
The current program has been highly successful at retaining USF students, with 94% of students who entered the Roger Bacon Scholar program being retained at the university. Additionally, the program has a demonstrated 92% four-year graduation rate. Given the Roger Bacon Scholars’ success in retention and graduation, the extension of this grant will serve the present student population well.
