CROWN POINT, Ind. – All nursing students from the University of Saint Francis Crown Point and the Franciscan Health Crown Point Emergency Medical Services Academy will collaborate on a multi-casualty disaster drill at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 in the parking lot of USF Crown Point, 12800 Mississippi Parkway, Pavilion U, Crown Point.
Media are invited to cover the drill.
The fifth annual drill will involve approximately 175 people. Students will respond to a simulated four-car accident. Students will remove victims from vehicles and transport them to “designated hospitals” inside the university, where their injuries will be assessed and treated. Instructors will monitor the students’ responses for a later evaluation session.
Nursing faculty and Franciscan Health emergency nurses will be supporting nursing students’ clinical judgment throughout the simulation. The University of Chicago medical helicopter will land on the front lawn of the university if weather permits. Other non-nursing students, a chaplain, a social worker and the Lake County Coroner’s department will also participate.
Traffic on U.S. Route 231 should not be affected, but businesses and residents in the immediate area of the drill are assured no emergency is taking place in the university’s parking lot, USF Crown Point officials said.
