FORT WAYNE, Ind. — University of Saint Francis alumnus Dr. Joe Steensma will return to his alma mater on Friday, October 12 at noon to present his research in the USF North Campus, 2702 Spring Street. He will deliver the lecture “Haiti: From Pearl of the Antilles to Peril in the Antilles – A cautionary tale of policy, circumstance, and public health.”
Steensma is a professor of environmental health at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. His research in global health and sustainability takes him to Australia, Costa Rica, the Bahamas and Haiti. His work in Haiti has focused on the inter-relationships between ecology, economics and human health. He is also a Scholar at the Institute for Public Health at Washington University and a Biodiversity Fellow at the Living Earth Collaborative. He is also the Sr. Scholar at the Global Good Fund in Washington, D.C. and a Fellow at the University of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia. He is also delivered the TEDTalk “Birds, Biology, and Business” at TEDxGatewayArch in 2015.
Steensma has served as the President of the Fort Wayne/Allen County Department of Health for many years and was the founder of ISG, Inc., which was headquartered in Fort Wayne. In addition to his work in environmental health, Dr. Steensma is well known for his passion for birds. He has authored two books on the subject of avian ecology and has a third to be released in early 2019.
