The Department of Social Work
The USF Department of Social Work offers an Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Social Welfare and the Baccalaureate of Social Work (BSW) degree. The BSW program has been continuously accredited by the Council on Social Work Education since 1976.
Both of programs are built on a strong liberal arts base rooted in Franciscan values, reflected in our commitment to deliver high quality curricular and field experiences for students. These values are integrated into all aspects of our courses.
The Department of Social Work prides itself on its substantial emphasis on global concerns and challenges facing diverse cultural groups today. Our courses and activities offer many experiential opportunities for students to expand their understanding of issues that reach across and between countries, continents and peoples.
The Department of Social Work offers five minors:
- Introductory Forensic Social Work
- Child Welfare and Advocacy
- Diversity Studies
- Gerontology
- Social Work (open to non-social work majors only)
The faculty of the Department of Social Work are eager to share information about our programs and minors with you. Please contact us for additional information or to schedule a visit. Feel free to download a powerpoint presentation about our social work program or watch On Any Given Day, a video about the ways social workers serve clients. If you are a prospective student, we encourage you schedule a time to sit in on our classes, shadow a faculty member for a day or just to meet with our students to learn more about our classes.

Accreditation
The BSW Program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Reaffirmation of accredited status was last granted in June 2003 and the next review will be in 2011. CSWE is the nationally recognized institution that defines the nature of the Department of Social Work's work, program and academic and practice-oriented goals. Accredited status enhances graduates' entry to the social work profession and increases students' potentials of seeking advanced standing status when they apply for graduate studies in social work.
