The ultimate wilderness challenge

At Wild Science Expedition Camp, the Saint Francis campus becomes an uncharted living laboratory where campers investigate the natural world through hands-on exploration, observation, and problem-solving. This is more than a nature hike, it’s an immersive, week-long field studies experience designed to help campers understand ecosystems, adapt to changing conditions, and discover how life persists in even the most unfamiliar environments.

A growing body of research shows that time in nature greatly benefits our physical and emotional well-being, reducing stress, improving mood, and sharpening focus. As the world looks for ways to reconnect with the earth, career opportunities in natural sciences are on the rise. At camp, we prepare the next generation to meet these opportunities. Our natural world needs thoughtful protection against emerging threats to our ecosystem, and our campers leave as the advocates of tomorrow.

The adventure primarily takes place right on campus in our diverse nature areas, featuring both prairie grasslands and forests, with exciting field trips to the Lindenwood Nature Preserve for deep-woods hiking.

Lunch is provided.

Exclusive opportunity for 9th-10th graders

Do you have what it takes to endure the elements? Our oldest campers have the unique option to participate in “Survive the Night.” This overnight experience puts their skills to the ultimate test under the stars. Register for the overnight experience when you register for camp. Additional $15 in tuition.

Program highlights

  • Campers will transition from building debris shelters and gathering berries in the forest to using microscopes to identify plankton and analyze water samples, revealing the hidden world within our ecosystems.
  • Campers will learn the technical skills of paddling and water safety, culminating in high-energy canoe races during our Friday survival challenges.
  • Campers will explore the forests and prairie grasslands of our own campus nature areas and embark on immersive field trips to the Lindenwood Nature Preserve for guided hiking and plant identification.

What campers will learn and experience

All Saint Francis Discovery Academy experiences are designed and taught by SF educators, giving campers a true taste of life on a college campus while exploring high-growth career paths.

This camp is a journey of self-discovery, helping campers identify their unique strengths and how to apply them to their academic and professional futures. Through the lens of our “Camp Castaway” survival challenge, campers will:

  • Boost self-confidence by overcoming “crash site” challenges and adapting to the resources nature provides.
  • Master valuable outdoor skills that prove you can thrive with nothing but what you find around you.
  • Refine problem-solving and teamwork skills, culminating in the Friday “Scramble” where campers must lead their new tribes to success.
  • Improve emotional health and focus through deep nature immersion, gaining a profound appreciation for our ecosystem’s protection.

“Walking into a forest will never be the same for me in the best way possible.”
