Saint Francis to display historic private collection of American and European Master artists

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—The University of Saint Francis invites the public to “From the Artist’s Hand: A Legacy of Works from the Collection of William and Mary Ann Roebel,” on display from Nov. 2 through Dec. 13 at the Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center, 1014 Leesburg Road.

The Roebel Collection includes historical prints and works of art from American and European Master artists from the 17th to 20th centuries. Artists include Rembrandt, Renoir, Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Dali and many others. A variety of technical print processes will be shown, featuring examples of how accomplished artists have used prints to share their work with a broader audience.

A reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Rolland Art Center. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public

The centerpiece of the exhibition is an original drawing by the French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919). William Roebel (along with his family) has gifted this work to Saint Francis to be displayed permanently at the Rolland Art Center. The drawing is the most valuable single work of art gifted to the university and was recently appraised at over $400,000. The gift will be an exceptional educational and artistic resource for the Saint Francis campus and the greater Fort Wayne community for decades to come.

Saint Francis Associate Professor of Art History Dr. Elizabeth Kuebler will present a lecture, “Highlights from the Roebel Collection,” at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the Rolland Art Center. Admission is free.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. (Galleries closed for Thanksgiving, Nov. 27 through Dec. 1).
