Federal Loans

Many graduate students are eligible for federal loans. To apply, you must first file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and use our school code: 001832.

Direct Stafford Unsubsidized Loans are not need-based and not restricted by family income. Borrowers pay interest semiannually while in school or add the interest to the amount borrowed at the time of repayment.

Grad PLUS Loans enable graduate students (who are enrolled half-time) to borrow up to the cost of their education minus any other financial aid. Repayment is deferred while the student is enrolled at least half-time, though interest will accrue after full disbursement of the loan. Prior to applying, applicants must complete a FAFSA and apply for the maximum annual loan eligibility through the Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan Program.

Employer Tuition Help

If you’re thinking about furthering your education or improving your skills, your employee benefits might have you covered. Employers offering tuition reimbursement programs often find it easier to attract and keep top-notch talent, while employees get a chance to boost their education, acquire new skills, and bring more value to their workplace.

What is Employer Tuition Reimbursement?

It’s a program where your employer chips in to cover some or all of your education expenses, as long as it aligns with their policy. Saint Francis’ graduate programs are designed to fit into your busy schedule and focus on your career development. Tuition reimbursement might be a perfect match for you.

To find out if your employer has this perk, talk with your manager or HR rep or check your employee handbook.

Tax Matters

Sometimes, using an education assistance program can affect your taxes.

The good news is that, under federal tax law, you can get up to $5,250 in tuition reimbursement from your employer tax-free each year. That means you don’t have to report it on your federal income taxes if your company has the right policy in place.

This tax-free assistance can cover tuition, fees, books, and some supplies. But, it won’t cover things like meals, lodging, transportation, personal tools, or hobby courses unless they’re work-related or part of your degree program.
