On Oct. 7, Saint Francis Physician Assistant (PA) alumni gathered with family and friends to celebrate and give special recognition to the “5s”—the classes of 1998, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2018.

Alumni attending were Megan Keating (MA ’23), Jacki Beemer (MS ’17), Dana Lingel (MS ’22), Bryan Umberg (BS ’06, MS ’08), Meredith Roth (MS ’18), Kaylin Kultgen (MS ’22), Josh Fairbanks (BS ’13, MS ’17, MOL ’23), Brian Keske (MS ’17), Anna Keske (MS ’17), Christy Buuck (MS ’06) and Kayla Wolf (MS ’18).

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the first Tom Hunter Distinguished Teaching and Service Award. This award recognizes an individual for their contribution to the Saint Francis PA program through teaching, mentorship and service to the profession and community.

Tom Hunter graduated from the Saint Francis PA program in 1999. After a few years in practice, he joined the PA program as principal faculty before later serving as the program director. After stepping down from this position, he practiced family medicine for many years. During this period, he continued to serve as a preceptor for PA students while also contributing to the program as an adjunct. In all these roles, Tom displayed tremendous enthusiasm in service to his patients and students. After his storied career, Tom retired in 2022. In retirement, he continues to volunteer for Turnstone when he is not busy with his many hobbies.

As a way of honoring Tom and his legacy, the USF Physician Assistant Distinguished Teaching and Service Award was created and presented to Tom as the first recipient in 2022. This award will henceforth be named the Tom Hunter Distinguished Teaching and Service Award to be presented annually based upon faculty and student nominations.
