USF welcomes 2023 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees

The inductees, to be honored at the CASPY Awards on April 20 at 7 p.m. in the USF Robert Goldstine Performing Arts Center:

Seth Coate ’16, FootballSeth Coate
Coate put his name all over the USF football record book, including setting an NAIA record by catching a touchdown pass in 27 consecutive games and logging 25 touchdown receptions in one season. But his finest moment came in his last game when the Cougars beat Baker 38-17 to win their first NAIA national championship in 2016. Coate caught nine passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns and was named the Offensive Player of the Game.


Erica Smith ’16, SoftballErica Smith
Smith was the first softball player in USF history to earn NAIA All-American honors as a junior in 2015 and left several marks in the school record book. She finished her career ranked #1 in doubles, home runs, RBIs, walks and total bases. She also ranked in the top five all-time in hits, batting average, slugging percentage, total bases, total at bats and games played. A durable player, she played 169 of her 174 games at catcher.


Skylarr Shurn ’14, Women’s BasketballSkylarr Shurn
Shurn became the first USF women’s player to be named NAIA Player of the Year and was the Most Valuable Player on the 2014 undefeated NAIA Division II National Championship team. She also won Crossroads League Player of the Year and led the NAIA in total scoring with a school-record 780 points while averaging 20.5 points per game. She scored 30 points in the championship game.

Austin Fox
It’s easy to call this team the best in school history, finishing 38-0 and capping the season with a national title. Skylarr Shurn was named the championship’s Most Valuable Player. Shurn and Brooke Ridley were All-Tournament First Team honorees and Jenelle Wilson was a Second Team honoree. Other members of the team were Kalah Baer, Jackie Dixie, Paige Frisch, Jessica Harrison, Kaleigh Hensley, Mallory Hester, Quila Jackson, Emily Montgomery, Bri Rinehart, Katie Saalfrank, Khyaire Speed, Akyah Taylor and Taylor Wilson.


Austin Fox ’15, ’16, Men’s BasketballAustin Fox
Fox scored 1,490 career points with 924 rebounds while helping the Cougars to an 81-24 record (.771) over his three seasons at USF. He led NAIA Division II in rebounding as a senior and was an NAIA First Team All-American, was named Crossroads League Male Athlete of the Year and Crossroads League Player of the Year, was a two-time Crossroads League First Team and All-Defensive Team honoree and Academic All-League.
