| Saint Francis welcomes Rev. Oscar Duarte as new chaplain |
The University of Saint Francis welcomed Rev. Oscar Duarte as its chaplain this fall after his assignment by the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-Sound Bend.
Fr. Oscar was born and raised in Bogota, Columbia. He and his family migrated to Orlando, Florida, where he attended high school and spent several years working in the music industry. He came to Fort Wayne in 2015 and joined the Franciscan Friars Minor. After he made simple vows with the Franciscans, he was invited by Bishop Rhoades to study to become a diocesan priest. Upon accepting the offer, he was given a pastoral year at a local parish and sent to Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Fr. Oscar graduated with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 2020 and completed a Master of Divinity in 2024. On June 1, 2024, he was ordained to the priesthood. During his first year as a priest, he was assigned to St. John the Evangelist, a large bilingual parish in Goshen, Indiana. In his second year, Fr. Oscar was assigned to two parishes in Huntington, Indiana, and tasked with ministering to four distinct communities in the area.
Fr. Oscar lives on the Saint Francis campus as he serves our students, faculty and staff.
