Saint Francis features Dream Worlds artwork in fall events

Digital artwork and photography by Lori Nix, Kathleen Gerber, Thomas Allen and Karen Thompson will be highlighted this fall with an art exhibition, the President’s Art Gala and lectures.

Nix + Gerber are Brooklyn-based, award-winning artists who will share their technique for creating miniature environments in photographs. Their dioramas are filled with meticulously detailed hand-crafted landscapes, architectural models, miniature reproductions and subtle humor. Thompson constructs scenes and photographs them, creating a 3D effect.

Photographs and digital imaging are utilized by Allen and Thompson. Here are events celebrating a variety of artwork by all four artists:

“Dream Worlds” Exhibition
Aug. 23 through Oct. 18

Location: Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center
Gallery hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday (Closed Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 2 to 4.)

Nix + Gerber Lecture
Thursday, Sept. 14, 6 p.m.
Location:
USF North Campus Auditorium, 2702 Spring Street

Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber will present a lecture on their studio practice. They will describe their collaborative approach as photographers and set designers for commercial clients and fine art projects. The presentation will also include how they use 3D printing, digital software and other technologies to create their unique miniature environments.

President’s Art Gala
Saturday, Sept. 16, 6 to 9 p.m.

Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center

The 2023 University of Saint Francis President’s Art Gala will celebrate Nix + Gerber’s labor-intensive work. The gala is presented by Saint Francis, Interim President Dr. Lance Richey and Saint Francis Creative Arts. Nix and Gerber will present a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m., highlighting their work in the exhibition. The gala is free and open to the public, and will include live music, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

Thomas Allen Lecture
Wednesday, Oct. 18, noon
Location:
Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center

Inspired by a View-Master and pop-up books, Thomas Allen will share how he recreates these 3D experiences within the context of his photographic processes. His inventive images are created and staged by hand, using no digital manipulation. His work has been published in Vanity Fair, National Geographic and The Wall Street Journal.
