USFopen - Windows XP

The following instructions are intended for Windows XP. Windows Vista are available here

Preparing Your Computer for Wireless Use

  1. Ensure your wireless card is enabled.
    1. Open network connections by clicking Start > Connect to > Show all connections. If your wireless card is disabled, right click the connection and click Enable.
    2. If your computer has an enable switch, please ensure that this is also enabled. This is usually a function key.
  2. Right click your wireless connection icon located in the system tray and select View available wireless networks
    1. If the Wireless Network Connection window shows the available networks, skip to Connecting to USFopen.
    2. If the window says, "Windows cannot configure this wireless connection..." then you need to allow the connection to be managed by Windows.
      1. Click Start > Run
      2. In the text box, type services.msc
      3. You will see a list of services on your computer. Scroll down to find Wireless Zero Configuration.
      4. Right click the Wireless Zero Configuration service and select Start.
      5. Close the window and goto Connecting to USFopen.

Connecting to USFopen

  1. In the Wireless Network Connection window, choose USFopen and click Connect.
  2. You might receive a warning that USFopen is an unsecured network, click Connect Anyway. USFopen is a nonencrypted network which means you and your information may be visible to other people and machines.

Registration & Authentication

  1. Once connected, open an internet browser window (i.e. Internet Explorer). You will be automatically redirected to the USF Network Access Control Portal. Click Yes to any certificate warnings to continue.
  2. Please read the policies, click Agree, and then click Next.
  3. Current students, faculty and staff will need to choose the first option: Students, Faculty and Staff.
  4. You will be asked to choose a scanning agent. Wireless users are recommended to use the dissolvable agent.
  5. Please enter the required information in the appropriate boxes. You will need to have your USF Username and Password in order to download the agent. If your account is locked out or expired, please visit the Help Desk with your OneCard in order to receive a new password. You may also use either your home phone  or your cell phone number. Finally, please use the drop down box to choose Wireless User. Nothing needs entered in the room number.
  6. A dialog box will prompt you to either run or save the scanning agent. Click Run and click Run again if you are asked about an unknown publisher. The agent will download and scan your computer. A new window will open with the results.
  7. If you have a successful scan, the system will begin granting access to the network. This process can take up to a minute and then redirect you to the USF homepage. If you are not redirected or receive a "page cannot be displayed," please either refresh your browser or close the browser and open a new browser window.
You should now have access to the USF network. Every time you reconnect to the network, you will be redirected and asked to authenticate again. Every 3 days, you will be redirected and required to register again. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the Help Desk at 260-399-7700 x6027.
