USFencrypted - Windows XP

The following instructions are intended for use with Windows XP. Windows Vista instructions are available here.

Preparing Your Computer for Wireless Use

  1. Ensure your wireless card is enabled.
    1. Open network connections by clicking Start > Connect to > Show all connections. If your wireless card is disabled, right click the connection and click Enable.
    2. If your computer has an enable switch, please ensure that this is also enabled. This is usually a function key.
  2. In the same Network Connection window, right click the wireles connection and select View available wireless networks.
    1. If the Wireless Network Connection window shows the available USF networks, skip to Connecting to USFencrypted.
    2. If the window says, "Windows cannot configure this wireless connection..." then you need to allow the connection to be managed by Windows. 
      1. Click Start > Run
      2. In the text box, type services.msc
      3. You will see a list of services on your computer. Scroll down to find Wireless Zero Configuration.
      4. Right click the Wireless Zero Configuration service and select Start.
      5. Close the window and goto Connecting to USFencrypted.

Connecting to USFencrypted

  1. In the Wireless Network Connection window (see step 2 above), click Change Advanced Settings and a properties window will appear.
  2. In the connection properties window, be sure Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings box is checked.
  3. Click Add under Preferred Networks.
  4. Click the Network Authentication drop down box. Is WPA2 available?
    1. Yes > Skip to Configuring Encryption.
    2. No > You must install the Microsoft Windows WPA2 patch (KB893357) before continuing. This patch is freely available from Microsoft.

Configuring Encryption

  1. Configure the wireless network properties to match the following settings.
    1. Under the Association tab, in Network name (SSID) enter USFencrypted
    2. Set Network Authentication drop down box to show WPA2.
    3. Set Data Encryption drop down box to show AES.
    4. Under the Authentication tab, set EAP type to Protected (PEAP).
    5. Uncheck Authenticate as computer when computer information is available.
    6. Click the Properties button
    7. In the Protected EAP properties window, uncheck Validate server certificate.
    8. Click the Configure button, and uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password.
    9. Click OK to all open windows.
  2. The wireless network will try to validate your identity. A popup balloon will appear on the wireless network icon reading, "Click here to select a certificate or other credentials for connection to the network USFencrypted. Click this balloon and a user credentials login screen will appear.
  3. Enter your USF username and password.
  4. For the domain, type SFC_NETWORK. Click OK/Login and you should now be connected to the USFencrypted network.

Registration & Authentication

  1. Once connected, open an internet browser window (Internet Explorer or Firefox). You will be automatically redirected to the USF Network Access Control Portal. Click Yes to any certificate warnings to continue.
  2. Please read the policies, click Agree, and then click Next.
  3. Current students, faculty and staff will need to choose the first option: Students, Faculty and Staff.
  4. You will be asked to choose a scanning agent. Wireless users are recommended to use the dissolvable agent.
  5. Please enter the required information in the appropriate boxes. You will need to have your USF Username and Password in order to download the agent. If your account is locked out or expired, please visit the Help Desk with your OneCard in order to receive a new password. You may also use either your home phone or your cell phone number. Finally, please use the drop down box to choose Wireless User. Nothing needs entered in the room number.
  6. A dialog box will prompt you to either run or save the scanning agent. Click Run and click Run again if you are asked about an unknown publisher. The agent will download and scan your computer. A new window will open with the results.
  7. If you have a successful scan, the system will begin granting access to the network. This process can take up to a minute and then redirect you to the USF homepage. If you are not redirected or receive a "page cannot be displayed," please either refresh your browser or close the browser and open a new browser window.

You should now have access to the USF network. Every time you reconnect to the network, you will be redirected and asked to authenticate again.
