The USF Wireless Network

The wireless network is available to all students, faculty and staff with a wireless enabled computer and active USF user account. Currently, only computers are supported on the wireless network. PDA's, cell phones, and other wireless enabled devices are not supported on the USF wireless network.

The USF wireless network supports 802.11b/g and provides two connection types:

USFopen
The USFopen network requires authentication, but is unencrypted. This is not recommended for confidential or private information as all traffic can be more easily intercepted and deciphered by eavesdroppers. Please read the connection steps for connecting to USFopen.

USFencrypted
The USFencrypted network also requires authentication but provides a level of encryption. This method requires more configuration on the part of each user, but is  more secure. Please read the connection steps required for connecting to USFencrypted.

Wireless Security Notice

Users should be aware of the inherent security risks that exist in a wireless network. While we have done our best to employ common security practices for our wireless network, the transmission over public airspace always poses a risk of interception and capture of wireless transmissions - regardless of the method of encryption or security. Users are encouraged to exercise caution when using wireless networks.

WiFi Health Concerns

There have been concerns that the radio frequency radiation (RFR) emitted by Wi-Fi devices poses a health risk to people. At this time there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak RF signals from wireless networks cause health issues. The University will continue to monitor these studies and weigh the results against the educational need for wireless at USF.
