Frequently Asked Questions
What is bandwidth?
Bandwidth is a general term for the amount of data that can be carried through a wired or wireless link for a certain time period. Basically, it is how big the "pipe" is for all of the information to travel through. It is not an unlimited amount. One person who is sharing files, broadcasting a virus, or playing network games can consume almost the entire amount--slowing down the connection or even preventing all others from being able to access the internet.
Why is my file sharing program no longer working?
USF takes United States copyright law very seriously. Failure to do so can result in fines, criminal prosecution, or even jail sentences for involved persons. For the protection of the University and our students, USF prohibits illegal duplication, downloading of programs, and/or altering of software and its related documentation. The use of file-sharing programs is discouraged and severely limited in Residence Halls. Usage of such programs or excessive usage of bandwidth for any reason may result in your network connection being disabled.
I used to be able to access the internet, but can't anymore. What should I do?
When you are suddenly unable to access the Internet, it could be because your port was disabled by UTS. Ports will be disconnected if suspicious activity (indicating a virus or other problem) is detected originating from your machine. To remedy this situation, contact the Help Desk describing the problem, your name, phone number and when you can best be reached. Please note that these issues are usually resolved within two normal working days.
Can I get my computer repaired through the University?
The Help Desk can only support resident students to the point of network connectivity. We will activate ports and verify that the network connection in your room is working. Problems with the computer itself are the responsibility of the student. The Help Desk will not troubleshoot or repair hardware and software problems on student's personal computers. Contact your computer manufacturer or another local computer repair shop for assistance with computer problems.
Can I purchase a new computer through the University?
UTS currently does not have a program where students can purchase computers from the University. There are, however, special pricing arrangements set up with both Gateway and Apple for student personal purchases. Purchases are made directly with the companies, but students can receive educational discounts.
