Requesting Temporary Network Access
Procedure and Terms of Use
Updated 10/9/07
University Technology Services (UTS) may make available short-term temporary (guest) acccounts to allow for Internet or computer access via the university network. These accounts can be requested as part of a university-sponsored function or event, and are governed by specific terms and acceptable use policies.
Note: All temporary accounts must be requested by a university department (the sponsoring department). The sponsoring department is responsible for ensuring that all appropriate information is submitted, as well as for notifying UTS if access must be disabled prior to the expiration date.
Library Guest Account: Vann Library has guest accounts available for temporary use on several computers within the library itself. These accounts can be immediately "checked out" and will allow guests to access the internet and library resources, as well as print via a guest card (prints are 8 cents a page). If you have a guest on campus who will only need internet access for a short-time on a University computer (such as for checking email) please have them visit the Vann Library second floor circulation desk. Please note that these guest accounts may only be used on specific computers within the library - see a library staff member for these locations.
Basic Temporary Account: These accounts are for individuals who are not students or paid employees at the university, but are attending a university-sponsored event or meeting. These accounts allow temporary users utilize the wireless network for Internet access or to log in to specific university desktop computers for internet and standard desktop applications (such as PowerPoint). No access to additional university systems (such as Jenzabar, network shares, or the USF Intranet) will be granted.
Request procedure:
- Account must be requested in writing (via Track-It) by a university department (the sponsoring department), at least 5 working days in advance.
- Request must include: Name of intended account recipient (user), contact information for intended recipient, specific dates the account is needed, and reason for requested access - such as conference name.
Special Access Account: These accounts are created for individuals who are not students or paid employees of USF, but are providing a service to the University which requires access to specific USF technology resources (beyond Basic Account priviledges). Examples of such individuals include consultants, contractors, review board members, or volunteers. In these situations, individual accounts may be created with system access limited to only what is required to fulfill thier university duties or role.
Request procedure:
- Because special access can require additional system configuration or verification, accounts must be requested in writing (via Track-It) by a university department (the sponsoring department), at least 10 working days in advance.
- Request must include: Name of intended account recipient (user), contact information for intended recipient, specific dates the account is needed, and reason for requested access.
- Sponsoring department must specifically list EACH resource to which the individual will need access.
- Sponsoring department must verify that access to these resources is appropriate.
Special Note: Any requested "special" access to University resources is not guaranteed. UTS reserves the right to deny special access requests due to legal requirements, system limitations, or other limiting factors.
Terms of Use for ALL Temporary Accounts
- Temporary accounts exist to provide network/internet access to registered guests of a sponsoring university department. No other services (email, file storage, hosting, etc.) are included as part of the guest account.
- The access granted via a temporary account is limited to the individual registered, and must not be shared with another individual. Sharing of temporary accounts is expressly prohibited.
- Temporary account users hold sole responsibility for any actions taken using the specified temporary account.
- Temporary account privileges are limited to a specified time period.
- The University does not assume responsibility for non-university links or sites accessed via the University network, including the use of or losses incurred by use of those links or sites.
- As internet traffic will be associated with the University, anonymous access and posting to websites through guest accounts is prohibited.
- The University shall not be held liable for any personal losses or damages (including, but not limited to: loss of profits, loss of data, business interruption, or other commercial damages) incurred as a result of your ability or inability to use the temporary account.
- The University reserves the right to change or revoke temporary access at any time.
In addition to the above Terms of Use, Temporary account users are expected to abide by IT Security Policies, which include provisions for Acceptable Use of University technology resources.
