Graduates of the Surgical Technology Program are eligible to sit for the National Certifying Examination offered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. This credential validates essential skills and knowledge necessary for practice as surgical technologists.
The university participates in the NBSTSA's pre-graduation testing program, allowing students to take the certification examination immediately prior to graduation. In 2012, the University of Saint Francis was awarded a Certifcate of Merit by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting for its high performance on the National Examination for the Certified Surgical Technologist.
Certification is recognized nationally and required for entry to practice in the State of Indiana. Many health care facilities in other states require certification as a condition of employment. Only graduates of CAAHEP accredited Surgical Technology Programs are eligible to take the certification exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, practitioners may use the title Certified Surgical Technologist (CST). "The graduating classes of 2012 and 2013 have achieved a 100% pass rate on this exam."
