What is a Resident Assistant (RA)?
A Resident Assistant is a student specially chosen to be responsible for the day-to-day life of the residence hall. He or she has lived in a USF residence hall for at least one year and is an upper-class student. The RA is often the first resource available for many students. Although the RA is not a trained counselor, he or she can help to sort out minor problems and refer residents to professionals when additional help is needed.
The RA plans several programs for the floor or hall each semester. These may be cognitive, community, personal, or holistic in nature. Suggestions from residents are very much appreciated in the planning of programs.
Resident Assistants make sure university rules are followed. Each hall is governed by the Rules and Policies found in the Student Handbook. Violations of these rules result in infringements upon the rights of residents, so it is in everyone’s interest to see that policies are followed.
The RA is a valuable source of information. If you have questions or concerns about USF, your hall, classes, professors, etc., ask the RA. If he or she doesn’t have the answers, the RA will be able to direct you to someone who does.
Finally, and most importantly, the RA will be there if you need someone to talk to. The RA will help you start new friendships and assist you on the way to getting the most out of your college experience.
