USF and Fort Wayne Youtheatre staging “Willy Wonka”

Feb. 20, 2014 FORT WAYNE, Ind.—The School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis and the Fort Wayne Youtheatre will collaborate on a production of the classic children’s story, “Willy Wonka,” at the USF Performing Arts Center, 431 W. Berry St., Fort Wayne, in March. Brad Beauchamp and Leslie Hormann will direct.

Roald Dahl’s timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir will come to life in this stage adaptation, which features the songs from the classic family film, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

In the story, recluse candy maker Willy Wonka declares that five lucky children will be given a tour of his private factory to see all of his candy-making secrets if they can find a golden ticket in a Wonka candy bar. Further, one lucky child will win a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate.

Viewers will follow the story of Charlie Bucket and four other children who found golden tickets as they tour Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory and discover the magical world of Oompa-loompas, Wonkavision and Everlasting Gobstobbers.

DeBrand Fine Chocolates will sweeten the deal with a complimentary “Wonka Bar” and card for a free tour of its Auburn Road facility in Fort Wayne for each child attending the play. Kids can also sign up for a drawing for one of six golden tickets entitling the bearer to a 10-piece DeBrand tasting bar collection. One winner will be chosen from the six golden ticket bearers to receive the grand prize of a DeBrand chocolate party for him or her and up to 15 guests. Revelers will enjoy chocolate pieces, desserts and drinks in the DeBrand private party room.

“This show is a great opportunity to introduce children to live theater. It is a scrumdidilyumptious musical guaranteed to delight everyone’s sweet tooth with lively songs and a fantasy ride into the land of pure imagination,” said co-director Brad Beauchamp.

Performances are Fridays through Sundays, March 21-23 and 28-30. Show times are 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
