USF’s Formula for Life inviting community to meet Father Andre

June 19, 2013 FORT WAYNE, Ind. The Formula for Life student group at the University of Saint Francis invites the community to meet Father Andre Sylvestre, director of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Orphanage in northern Haiti, on Thursday, July 18 from 6-8 p.m. in the ballroom of Brookside, the former Bass mansion.

Formula for Life has supplied Sylvestre’s orphanage with food for years through its annual 5K walk/run and silent auction. Last fall, the group set a goal of raising $50,000 in funds and in-kind donations to help Father Sylvestre build a new orphanage to house 100 Haitian orphans on rural acreage he owns. The students met their goal, and construction is slated to begin this summer.

Father Sylvestre will share how he founded the orphanage after discovering three children who lost their parents in the 2010 earthquake. He will reveal the floor plans and his ongoing vision for the new, permanent home for the orphans, which will provide them with plenty of room to learn and grow. He will also discuss his passion for saving children left parentless by disaster, abandonment or disease, and narrate the story of the USF group’s intersection with his orphanage and how that has impacted his mission.

The event is free and open to the public, who made the new orphanage a possibility by responding to the USF student group’s appeal. For more information, email to aobringer@sf.edu.
