USF exhibition exploring new media

Jan. 23, 2014 FORT WAYNE, Ind.—An exhibition at the University of Saint Francis will feature four artists who push the creative boundaries of traditional media. “New Media Exploration: Michael Dinges, Dennis Lee Mitchell, Brett Freund and Allessandro Bavari” will run through Feb. 26 in the Weatherhead Gallery in the Rolland Center for Art and Visual Communication off Leesburg Road.

Dinges and Mitchell create “drawings” in a non-traditional way. Dinges uses a dremel engraving tool to inscribe into the surface of man-made plastic objects such as laptop computers, buckets and even a lifeboat. The effect is reminiscent of the 19th century sailor’s art of scrimshaw. Mitchell creates drawings by applying smoke to paper. His works are fluid and non-objective, in contrast to the graphic imagery of Dinges’ engraved images.

Freund is an emerging ceramic sculptor who illustrates his slab and cast works by covering the surface with wax and then piercing the wax with stains. After rubbing the stains away, marks are left, creating abstract lines that complement the geometric aspects of his sculptural and functional works.

The Goldfish Gallery will display digital images and computer multi-media animation by Italian artist Alessandro Bavari. His “METACHAOS” is a multidisciplinary audio-visual project, articulated in a short film, a set of photographic images and mixed-technique paintings. It seeks to represent the most tragic aspects of the human nature and of its motion, such as war, madness, social change and hate. The film won the Golden Nica at the Prix Ars Electronica, Austria. Earlier works by Bavari will also be on view, including “TRYPTICHON.”

The Weatherhead and Goldfish galleries are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Call 260.399.8064 for more information.
