USF Crown Point announces enrollment increase at opening convocation and mass
Aug. 30, 2012 CROWN POINT, Ind. - University of Saint Francis (USF) Crown Point enrollment continues to climb. University President Sister M. Elise Kriss, OSF announced a fall enrollment of 189 students during an Opening Convocation and Mass Thursday.
The figure is 20 percent higher than USF Crown Point enrollment last fall and over 300 percent higher than fall 2007 enrollment. Director of Marketing and Development Sandie Phalen attributed the rise to community support, the addition of programs and the launching of a Virtual Campus to see adult learners through to degree completion.
USF Crown Point's healthcare programs filled a vital niche in the education needs of northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois, she said. The region’s numerous large hospitals, coupled with the nation's aging population, increases the need for healthcare education and staff. In addition, the Crown Point area has been very embracing of the university and its education opportunities, she said.
The university has also enhanced its programming to provide more opportunities for regional students, she said. A new director for its Sim Lab adds a high-tech edge to USF Crown Point nursing education, and expanded programming includes associate degrees in liberal studies and clinical laboratory science.
The University of Saint Francis has also launched a Virtual Campus as part of a College of Adult Learning. The new Virtual Campus is geared toward the needs of the working adult who may be seeding a graduate program or have college credits completed but wants to pursue a degree.
Two fully online accelerated programs, the 12-month Master of Business Administration and the 12-month Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) are offered in this inaugural Virtual Campus term. The university will add courses as the Virtual Campus develops. The courses are competitively priced and are structured in eight-week terms to attract adults with busy lives.
Interim USF Crown Point Dean Sister Elaine Brothers, OSF, hosted dignitaries and university administrators, including USF Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. J. Andrew Prall, for the traditional opening of the academic year. Bishop Dale Melczek of the Catholic Diocese of Gary celebrated mass. During the service, Bishop Melczek spoke of the university’s Franciscan heritage and its role in the lives of the university's students and staff.
President Kriss detailed USF Crown Point’s success as underscored by the enrollment increase, and outlined university traditions, progress and plans during the convocation.
The University of Saint Francis Crown Point is a regional campus of the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind., a private Catholic university in the Franciscan tradition. USFCP makes academic excellence and a values-based education available to Crown Point-area students through entry-level, bridging and graduate-level programs. Among these are six healthcare-related majors, including nursing and healthcare administration, and an associate of liberal studies degree with student-designed concentrations.
