Standing Against Racism
USF hosted Stand Against Racism with the YWCA for the third consecutive year on April 25, with a new wrinkle—for the first time, USF students invited the community, reached out to area leaders for support and organized the entire event in Hutzell Athletic Center. Funding for the student-led rally against racial prejudice and intolerance was procured through a grant for service learning from Campus Compact, an organization dedicated to campus-based civic engagement. USF’s Dr. Karen Monique Gregg procured the grant.
USF student leaders Taylor Brown, Charles Gaston, Lorinda Harkenrider, Erik Humphrey, Amber Miller, Sarah Morton and Thomas Nolan from Comparative Race and Ethnic Relations class, with online assistance from students in Introduction to Race and Ethnicity, introduced speakers and presentations designed to heighten awareness of the insidious presence of racism.
Keynote speaker and USF Director of TRiO Services, Ronald Lewis, spoke compellingly on the history of racism and its presence today. Harkenrider also sang and spoke, while storyteller Chief Conda Ridley delivered the African folk tale, “The People Could Fly.” YWCA Northeast Indiana, USF and City of Fort Wayne representatives also made comments.
To close, Katrina Boedeker, Director of the USF Office for Service and Social Action, led a pledge to stand against racism and the song, “We Shall Overcome.”
