Spring Street bridge closure to reroute university and other local traffic

Sept. 29, 2011 FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Beginning in late October, the Spring Street Bridge near Leesburg Road will be closed for repair work over the Norfolk-Southern railroad.

City and county officials have informed the university that the bridge will be closed through mid-August 2012. Alternate traffic routes include State Boulevard, Tyler Avenue, Main Street, Runion Street and Hilligas Road. “We are fortunate that the intersection of Spring Street and Leesburg Road will remain open through next summer. Traffic at the Spring and Leesburg intersection will increase measurably during the construction,” stated Tom Buuck, the university’s director of operations.

The university has informed its constituents of the upcoming construction and the alternative routes available to them. The exact date of the closure is dependent upon the relocation of power lines.

“The bridge has been in disrepair for a long time making the work very necessary. We were pleased that the adjacent Spring Street and Leesburg Road intersection expansion will begin and end over the summer months when most students are not in session,” added Buuck.

The University of Saint Francis, founded in 1890 as a comprehensive university in the Catholic Franciscan tradition, offers more than 60 undergraduate and 14 graduate programs in five schools: The School of Health Sciences, School of Arts and Sciences, Keith Busse School of Business and Entrepreneurial Leadership, School of Professional Studies and School of Creative Arts.
