New media artist speaking for USF Closer Look lecture
Jan. 23, 2014 FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Michael Dinges, an engraver who is pushing creative boundaries as a “new media” artist, will be the guest speaker for the Closer Look lecture series at the University of Saint Francis North Campus, 2702 Spring St., at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26.
As one of four artists exhibiting in the university’s New Media Exploration exhibit, Dinges has turned traditional media on its ear in order to recreate defunct tools as surfaces for elaborate engravings of natural forms, scientific models and apocalyptic quotations. Using a Dremel engraving tool to inscribe into the surface of man-made plastic objects such as laptop computers, buckets and even a lifeboat, he creates an effect reminiscent of the 19th century sailor’s art of scrimshaw.
Dinges received his Bachelor of Fine Art from the Arts Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., and his Master of Fine Art from the University of Chicago. He has participated in multiple exhibitions across the country, and his work is included in the collections of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the EBay Corporation and Selig Sacks, among others. Dinges is represented by the Packer Schopf Gallery in Chicago. His work can be viewed online.
All Closer Look lectures and performances are free to the public. This year's series was made possible in part by Canon Explorers of Light, Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne, the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Call 260.399.8064 for more information.
