Making an Impact in a Variety of Ways
Can a soccer game have a major impact on a group of children? Can playing a Wii with kids make them feel special? If you are a part of the USF Women's Soccer Team, the answer is emphatically "Yes."
How can a soccer game impact a group of kids? When that soccer game is a part of Spring Fling, and the proceeds go towards Camp Watcha Wanna-do, it goes a long way in making cancer survivors feel normal. Over $5000 were raised this year for the camp, where for one week over the summer, campers get to experience everything from hiking, archery, swimming, ropes courses, and more. It is seven days of freedom and acceptance with other cancer survivors who understand what each person is going through. But that's not all the soccer team does to make an impact.
"You do not know how much it meant for Andre Turner and other USF student athletes to play the Wii with Payton for a few hours. It is such an escape for the kids." - Tammy Else at Lutheran Hospital.
Community service is also a part of being on the women's soccer team. Earlier in the year, the team paid a visit to Lutheran Children's Hospital. Bringing t-shirts with the words "I'm An Inspiriation," members of the team made the rounds at the hospital. There was joking around with Mitch who was undergoing chemotherapy, feeding Cameron, a small baby boy, and playing the Wii with Payton. For a few hours, the kids could feel normal and have a total escape from the hospital setting.
"I'm pretty sure the kids at Lutheran made us smile as much as we did them," USF coach Christy Young said. "I could tell from the faces on our players and the conversations afterwards that it was a special day, an inspiration to carry on community service and helping others beyond this special day."
