Two Students Venturing to Build a Wind Farm

Small business represents 99% of all employers, employ 50% of all private sector workers, and 39% of high tech jobs today. In today's economy, a large majority of the population is looking and wishing they could own their own business.

Tersus Terra Energies is a $25 million wind mill project created by students Marty Wyss and Justin Adams. Now, with encouragement from school advisory officials and local business leaders, the pair are looking for venture capital to fund the project. The plan calls for eight wind turbines to sit on 1000 acres of farm land. The turbines would be spaced out evenly so farming can still occur and the energy collected would be sold to the utility company that runs the electrical grid.

The idea of a wind mill farm came about as part of the School of Business' Business Plan Competition. Ten student teams each created a business plan involving a green technology. Students gained experience in writing plans that included marketing, sales, financial plans, and funding sources. In addition to getting experience writing a business plan, the students also gained confidence and skills necessary to present their plans to bankers and investors. Each team presented to a panel of judges made up of local business presidents, CEOs, and school officials.

While prizes totaling $3000 were given out, including Mad Ants box seats, it is the hope of those involved in the Business Plan Competition that students may be able to start their own businesses using the skills they have learned from the competition.
