Paul teaches physics and physical science including earth/space science. He is interested in various applied physics problems that are connected to energy, light and sustainability. In the area of materials science, he explores the electronic configurations of various luminescent materials towards the goal of improving the efficiency of solid state lighting. This typically involves the synthesis and characterization of rare-earth doped ceramic powders. These materials are used in a variety of lighting applications; plasma displays, LED’s and general room lighting are only a few of the many applications. In a separate direction, Dr. Schmidt is also interested in the education and dissemination of energy awareness. An example project involves teaching students the basics of energy audits for home inspection. This would allow the students to then perform the audits and then educate others on simple energy concepts that can help reduce our overall energy footprint.
