Helen Murray is a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and a graduate of Central Catholic High School. Murray earned a bachelor’s degree in computer technology from Purdue University and a master of business administration degree (magna cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame. She completed American Electric Power’s (AEP’s) Executive Management Development Program at Ohio State University and the Economic Development Training Program at Ball State University.
As Dean of KBSoBEL at USF, Helen has responsibility for the strategy, quality of education, productivity, personnel administration and financial viability of the school. She has recently led the school to achieve national accreditation for its programs.
In July of 2010, Murray retired as President and COO of Indiana Michigan Power Company (I&M), a subsidiary of AEP that serves 565,000 customers in Indiana and Michigan. In that position since 2006, she had authority for distribution and customer operations as well as a wide range of community and regulatory relationships.
Murray began her career in the electric power industry with Indiana Michigan Power in 1977 as a computer programmer in Fort Wayne. After promotions to positions of increasing responsibility in programming, Murray was promoted to assistant for the South Bend, Indiana, division manager in 1992. Murray was named district manager for the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor area in 1994 with responsibility for distribution, customer services and community affairs for 52,000 customers.
Murray transferred to the AEP Service Corporation in Columbus, Ohio, in 1996 to take over management of the development and implementation of a centralized customer information system. She joined the AEP Customer Operations group in 2000 as director of business systems support. She was named director of billing and credit operations in January of 2002. In 2004, she was named vice president of customer operations for AEP and made responsible for the centralized customer interface for AEP’s 5 million customers. That included oversight of call centers, billing, collections and customer service support as well as responsibility for the information technology systems that support AEP’s subsidiary companies.
As President and COO of I&M, Murray served on the Board of the Indiana Energy Association, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the Executive Committee of the Board of the Northeast Indiana Corporate Council, and the board of the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce. She also served as Chair of the Board of the Public Safety Academy of Northeast Indiana and as a Board Trustee of the University of Saint Francis.
Currently, Murray serves on the advisory board of the YLNI (Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana) and on the board of the Foellinger Foundation. She also is a founding member of USF’s Women’s CEO Group.
