Faith, Reason, and Some of their Modern-day Counterfeits

When one hears of a supposed war being waged today between religion and science, how should one react? Here are a few common responses:

Religion and science are concerned with mutually exclusive domains, so there can be no such war.
The war has been waged and was won long ago by one of the two sides, but the adherents of the losing side are uninformed or in denial about their loss.
History is rife with examples of the war, and the war continues unabated.

There is something wrong with each of these responses.

In this public lecture, Dr. Lewis Pearson (Assistant Professor of Philosophy) will argue that the oft-reported tensions between religion and science result from a failure to understand the nature of both faith and reason. Dr. Pearson will explain that there isn't a war today between faith and reason, but rather, that there is a war on faith and reason.

This lecture is free and open to the public, and is part of the Department of Philosophy & Theology's Public Lecture Series 2011-12, sponsored by the Department of Philosophy & Theology and the School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Saint Francis.
