Online Dictionary and Thesaurus

General

My Virtual Reference Desk
A privately-run service, MVRD indexes hundreds of online publication, services, and other indices. It is extensive, easy to navigate, and has no advertising.

Online Dictionaries, Thesauri, and Encyclopedias
This index at Yahoo is not as extensive as MVRD’s, but it provides a more concise list of online references.

Roget’s Thesaurus
The classic thesaurus is now hypertextual, and allows you to easily find the exact word you want.

Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations
The electronic form allows you to search quotations by topic or author.

Quotation Collections At Yahoo
This index provides links to numerous quotation collections and can provide a contemporary balance to quotations found in Bartlett’s.

Thomas (Library of Congress)
Thomas offers extensive information on American government and politics, including Congressional documents, White House press releases and links to numerous government agencies.

Newspapers

Yahoo's Newspapers
Yahoo's index is comprehensive, providing links to newspapers all over the U.S. and throughout the world.

The Chronicle of Higher Education

Magazines

Electronic Magazines
This link will provide a list of online magazines, both those that originate in print form and others that are designed strictly for the Web.

Books

Online Books
This link provides indices of "books" that are online, from traditional texts through electronic literature.

The Bartleby Library
This site collects electronic versions of many classic books now in the public domain. You'll be happy to see you can search for key words and phrases in many of them.

Media

ABCNEWS
The American Broadcasting Company has online resources, particularly on its news programs and entertainment shows.

National Public Radio
NPR provides in-depth news and information on current events and the arts. The local NPR affiliate, WBNI – 89.1 also maintains a Web site.

Alta Vista
It is possibly the most comprehensive single search engine on the Web, but be ready for a flood of responses if your keyword search isn't specific enough.

WebCrawler
It is not as comprehensive as Alta Vista, but its "tips" pages are far easier to understand. It has fewer ads to load (hence fewer graphics), so this engine can be a real time-saver on slower machines.

Yahoo
This is the most browse-able and in-depth of the subject indexes, offering a search option at each level of information. A great place to learn about the Web or go roaming for possible paper topics, especially if you follow the "What's Cool" and "What's New" links.

LookSmart
This subject index sponsored by Readers Digest is billed as the place to go when you want to find resources quickly and efficiently.

Yahooligans
Something for kids.
