Andrea teaches introductory chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical and environmental chemistry. She is interested in the development of eco-friendly metal-based catalysis through green chemistry. Her approach towards increasing eco-sustainability in catalysis involves the substitution of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) for traditional organic solvents in multiple bond metathesis. The use of RTILs instead of organic solvents can potentially increase the recyclability of the reaction medium, while decreasing the release of harmful volatile organic compounds. The incorporation of RTILs would further enhance an area of metathesis that has revolutionized the synthesis of carbon-carbon double and triple bonds in natural products, polymers, pharmaceuticals, and many other materials.
