The Chemistry Department at USF offers a major in Chemistry, a minor in Chemistry, Chemistry- Pre-medical track, Forensics Chemistry, and an associate degree in Chemsitry. In addition, we provide instruction for the Secondary Education majors with empahasis in chemistry, general science and physical science.
The faculty in the department of chemistry have a variety of interests (water quality, protein RNA interactions, luminescent materials, tetrapyrroles, ionic liquids, and minerals) providing students with a range of perspectives about the principles and role of chemistry in the world around us. Class sizes (4-20 students) provide faculty the opportunity to interact with each student individually and provide the opportunity for each student to have hands-on experience in the laboratory. Students have the opportunity to be involved in research projects, a variety of clubs (Pre-Pharmacy Club, Science Club, and ECO club), and to active leaders in Science Symposium.
The instrumental support in our department is one of the finest available for a liberal arts college of our size. Our labs are stocked with instruments designed to provide the student with a hands-on experience collecting and analyzing data. Our instrumentation includes: an NMR spectrometer; several Gas Chromatographs; two Mass Spectrometers; several Absorption Spectrometers as well as UV-VIS Spectrometer, IR Spectrometers, and Fluorescent Spectrometer; and an HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography). Our department houses the Schouweiler Planetarium, Observatory Deck and five specialized laboratories that enable the student to encounter and interact with the materials and equipment of scientific research.
