Mudslinging 101: Politics, Propaganda and Parody

Workshop Director: Dr. Matthew Smith
Workshop Session Instructors: Dr. Matthew Smith, Dr. Andrew Prall, Dr. Ted Remington
Mudslinging 101 looks at examples of political ads as a form of propaganda, along with ways in which parodies of these  ads help us understand how to better "read" such advertisements. We'll begin by looking at some particular political ads to get a sense of the genre, then look at parodies of these ads to see how they use humor to highlight how the original ads attempt to manipulate their audience. You will then have a chance to use your own creative and comic abilities to make your own parody of a political advertisement in small groups and then share them with fellow participants.

Creation to Crusades

Workshop Director: Dr. David Fleischacker
Workshop Session Instructors:
Creation, Ecology and the Environment - Dr. Adam DeVille and Sr. Anita Holzmer
Fairness & Economic Exchange Simulation - Dr. Earl Kumfer
Muslims, Catholics and the Crusades - Dr. John Bequette

In this series of three workshops students will delve into modern and medieval topics in Philosophy and Theology.  Workshops will cover the Catholic teachings on creation, ecology and the environment; an ethical examination of the meaning of "fairness" using a simulation program in which students create and adjust the "rules" for economic exchange; and an exploration of the relationship between Muslims, Catholics and the Crusades.
