I’ve always been captivated and intrigued by Funk Art, for me it is the most self expressive and if I had to describe my work to someone I would say it falls under this category.  It was an art movement inspired by popular culture and the public’s reactions against nonobjective abstract expressionism.  The term Funk describes passion, sensuousness, and quirkiness. This movement was most popular in the 60’s, 70’s but still has a following even today.   Funk artists sought out to reintroduce social responsibility into the contemporary art forum.  This Funk movement opened new doors in the ceramics medium by changing it from a crafts media to an aesthetic one. I have a large body of work which includes ceramic sculptures, pottery, and multimedia inspired by this funk movement. My work evolved through self discovery and research on human emotion and expression through ceramic sculpture. My intent is to convey frustration with the human condition through amusement, disgust, pain and happiness, my inspiration in this creation process are things that are going on around me in society and the general public as a whole, using myself as well as other wacky creations in clay as the subject matter.
