PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT
For information on the PLA
process or to access the handbook please click on the
following links:
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a process entered into
to earn college credit for learning that has been acquired
outside of the traditional classroom. A maximum of 32
credit hours can be earned toward a Bachelor’s degree and 16
credit hours can be earned toward an Associate degree.
Up to 25% of the total program hours required for a Master’s
degree can be earned through PLA. While credit is awarded
for prior learning, no grades are assigned. Certain programs
cannot award credit for prior learning because of rules
created by Indiana licensing and regulatory agencies. No
duplication of credit is allowed.
Transfer credit can be considered a type of prior
learning, but it is not included here.
Types of Prior Learning Assessment
Proficiency Examinations – A description and
listing of the possible tests offered by outside
agencies is included in this brochure. In addition, some
academic departments at the University of Saint Francis
are able to offer challenge examinations that allow a
student to demonstrate college-level competency by means
of internally constructed examinations. These are not
available in all departments; please contact the
specific department if you would like more information.
Military Training – The American Council on
Education (ACE) has worked cooperatively with the
Department of Defense (DOD) and the Armed Services in
establishing standards for recognizing learning acquired
in military service. This learning may be worth college
credit. The student must submit a military transcript
(e.g., AARTS, College of the Air Force, etc.), DD214,
and/or DD295 to the Office of the Registrar for
evaluation.
National Program on Non-Collegiate Sponsored
Instruction (NPONSI) – National PONSI evaluates
courses and examination programs offered nationwide by
non-collegiate organizations and makes recommendations
on their comparability to college-level instruction.
These recommendations are published annually in a
directory used by academic institutions as a guide in
awarding credit to individuals who have successfully
completed the courses and examination programs listed.
Examples of this would be Microsoft training programs or
the LOMA courses available to employees in the insurance
industry.
Portfolio – The student-prepared prior learning
portfolio is the most commonly accepted method used to
evaluate prior learning. It is a collection of
narratives and written documentation that articulates a
student’s academically relevant, non-college classroom
learning on a per course basis.
Students should meet with the Registrar in the Pope
John Paul II Center, Room 207 (260-399-7700 ext 6524) to
review the portfolio process. The portfolio handbook,
which explains the process and contains the forms to
submit, will be provided at the time of the interview.
Before beginning the portfolio process, students must
pay a fee at the Business Office in Trinity Hall.
Once the portfolio is completed and turned in, a
faculty evaluator will review it to determine if credit
can be awarded. The student will receive notification of
the outcome of the portfolio evaluation from the
Registrar’s Office.
COLLEGE LEVEL EXAMINATION PROGRAMS
Several examinations are available to validate
college-level learning:
¨ CLEP
(College Level Examination Program)
CLEP provides the learner the opportunity to demonstrate
college-level learning by taking nationally standardized
examinations that assess the knowledge and skills taught in
college-level courses. More than 30 CLEP tests are available
and are administered regularly at local sites. Application
forms and a study guide with sample tests are available
through the Internet at
www.collegeboard.com
All CLEP tests are administered by computer at a testing
site. Students taking CLEP exams should request that
official CLEP score reports be sent to the University of
Saint Francis, Institution Code Number 1693. Your
personal, unofficial test results will be available
to you immediately after taking the test. You will be
notified when the University of Saint Francis has received
and evaluated your test score. If the score is acceptable,
the appropriate college credit will be awarded. For more
information concerning CLEP Tests, go to the College Board
Web site at
www.collegeboard.com

nontraditional educational experiences by administering
tests that provide qualified military personnel and
civilians with the opportunity to obtain academic credit.
For more information about this program consult their
website at http://voled.doded.mil/dantes/exam/DSST.htm.
The DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST’s) offer more
than thirty tests in a wide variety of introductory
college-level courses and are administered monthly at
Huntington University and during the third week of each
month at Indiana Wesleyan University. For more information,
please contact the testing sites. These tests have a
deadline of two weeks before the test for registration and
payment. You will be notified when the University of Saint
Francis has received and evaluated your test score. If the
score is acceptable, the appropriate college credit will be
