Student Internship Process
During your internship search, as in most social and
business situations, there are ethical standards and
practices that are very important. Remember that you are
representing the University of Saint Francis and other USF
students as well as yourself. If you are uncomfortable about
how to handle a situation, please seek assistance from your
academic advisor or the Office of Career & Professional
Development.
Basic Ethical Guidelines for
Internships
- If you make a commitment, KEEP IT!! If extraordinary
circumstances prevent you from keeping a commitment,
contact others involved to inform of this information as
soon as possible.
- Always be truthful when describing your education and
work experience on your resume and application form during
an interview.
- Sign up for interviews with only the employers you are
interested in. If you wish to practice your interviewing
skills, the Office of Career & Professional Development
provides opportunities for you to do so.
- If you are asked back for a second interview and you
know you are definitely not interested, let the employer
know immediately that you no longer wish to be a
candidate.
- If you need more time to make a decision about
accepting an offer, ask for an extension. Keep in mind the
employer is not obligated to grant an extension.
- When you decide to accept an offer, notify other
employers who may be waiting to hear from you that you are
no longer available.
- After accepting an offer, you should stand by your
decision. You have a commitment to the employer at this
point and are obligated to stop looking for employment
elsewhere.
- Do not mislead the company into thinking you have
multiple offers when you do not.
