University of Saint Francis Thanks Community for Successful Earth Week Events

May 2, 2008, Fort Wayne, Indiana: The University of Saint Francis would like to extend a sincere thank you to the community for its participation in recent Earth Week events.

The University of Saint Francis, Recycle Force of Indy and Action Environmental (Fort Wayne) unloaded nearly 100 vehicles and collected half a semi-truck worth of electronics, totaling 7,293 pounds. Recycle Force will dismantle completely all the electronics collected and recycle the metals, glass and plastic. Less than 1% of the items collected will ever see the landfill. Recycle Force has recycled 3 ½ million pounds of electronics in the past three years.

The university was proud to host this event with partner companies that not only held proper licensures required by local, state and federal law, but also provided transportation and labor services at no cost. Free-will donations that were accepted will be used to sponsor a bicycle loan program for campus students next academic year.

The Elementary Education Earth Day activities drew in approximately 60 children and parents who experienced hands-on activities about the Water Cycle, USF's Wave Tank/Stream Table, the Rock Cycle, Fossils from Indiana, and made plaster casts of animal tracks. This event was a culmination of environmental issue-based teaching modules that USF students prepared and presented to third graders at Most Precious Blood, Queen of Angels and St Jude classes over several weeks.

In association with the Fort Wayne Arborist’s Association, the university also held a tree giveaway on Arbor Day. Free tulip trees, red bud trees and conifers were distributed to community participants. Approximately 1,200 trees were given away in just under two hours.

The University of Saint Francis, founded in 1890, is a comprehensive university in the Catholic Franciscan tradition, offering undergraduate and graduate programs to more than 2,100 students from a broad geographic region.
