Mission: University of Saint Francis exists to serve students by facilitating learning and personal and professional development in an environment permeated by Franciscan values.

Founded in 1890 by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Perpetual Adoration, the University is a Catholic, coeducational institution of higher education in the liberal arts tradition, offering undergraduate and graduate programs designed to meet the needs of a diverse student body.

Student Demographic Characteristics: Total undergraduate enrollment numbers 1440 of whom 419 are part-time students.  Eighty four percent are Indiana residents.  Approximately 16 per cent of the undergraduate students are enrolled in teacher education, and of those numbers 63 per cent are female.  Twelve per cent of all students are minority and five per cent minority is in teacher education.  The average SAT score for fall, 1999 students was 947 combined math and verbal.

 

Type of Institution:  Candidates in teacher education must fulfill the following criteria to be admitted into and continue their programs:

 

A.      Students must make application for entrance into the teacher education program prior to their junior year and have successfully completed:

 

(1)     A minimum of 24 semester hours with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.50. All teacher education majors will not be recommended for program admittance or retention if they achieve less than a grade of "C" in major/minor and professional education courses required for teacher licensure.

(2)           Education 100; Education 201; Special Education 136.

(3)           Passage of PRAXIS I (Pre-professional Skills Test:PPST) in reading, writing, and mathematics.

 

 

A.      Candidates applying for student teaching must:

 

1.         Be admitted into the Teacher Education Program.

 

2.         Possess an overall cumulative index of 2.50 or take additional work as prescribed by a counselor.

 

3.         Possess a cumulative index of 2.80 in the following areas:

 

         Elementary majors and minors - in courses in professional education, special education, EDUC 322, EDUC 205, and the minor area.

 

         Secondary Education and Special Education Majors - in courses in the teaching major and professional education courses, including  EDUC 205.

 

            4.     Complete a minimum of 94 semester hours of credit.  These hours          

                  include practica, all methods courses, and must be completed                  

                  prior to student teaching.  Art majors must also have completed

                    ART 403.

  

 

Program Completers:  A program completer at the University of Saint Francis is a teacher candidate who completes all degree requirements, and all requirements for Indiana licensure.

 

Teacher Preparation Program: The University of Saint Francis offers ten baccalaureate programs leading to Indiana teacher licensure and two graduate level licensure program.

 

Accreditation: The North Central Association of College and Schools accredit The University of Saint Francis, and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredits the school of education.  The Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) accredits all of the programs in teacher education.

 

 

Unique Program Characteristics:  The following characterize the teacher education program at the University of Saint Francis.

 

  1. Only graduate program in special education in NE Indiana.
  2. Have implemented a four-year performance based portfolio assessment for beginning teacher competencies.
  3. All elementary education majors are required a minor.
  4. All education majors are required at least 100-150 hours in field experiences prior to student teaching.
  5. Implemented a comprehensive service-learning component in pre-service training.
  6. Active community based drama organization (Jesters) which encompasses theatrical productions for the disabled.

 

Notable Features and Accomplishments: 

 

  1. “Teachers in Hardhats” grant by Ameritech/Foundation for Independent Higher Education Partnership.  Model program for special education teachers.
  2. NBD/USF partnership grant for specific training for ISTEP tutoring in local high schools.
  3. Student participation at National Conference for Service Learning.
