Wrapping Up the Spring Athletic Season

It was a season of “win some, lose some” for USF’s baseball, softball and track & field teams. But whether they were winning or losing, the Cougars showed plenty of skill and strength, and a whole lot of heart. Below are brief recaps, but for all the athletic action, visit our website.

Baseball

In USF’s May 2 game with Indiana Wesleyan University, senior Tom Deglitz hit a walkoff grand slam in the ninth inning. The Cougars’ exciting 6-5 win over IWU earned USF a rematch against Crossroads League regular-season champion Taylor University on May 3. Unfortunately, USF lost to Taylor 8-6.

Softball

The Lady Cougars got off to a great start when they defeated Indiana Wesleyan University 3-0, with Alyssa Kumpfmiller leading USF to that Game 1 victory in the Crossroads League Tournament. But, the Lady Cougars then lost to top-seed Marian University 6-2, and were eliminated by Taylor University 9-2 on May 1.

Track & Field - Men's

Representing USF in the 2013 Crossroads League Track and Field Championship, sophomore James Brames was a blue-ribbon winner in the hammer throw competition at Huntington University. His winning distance measured 51.32 meters.

Track & Field - Women's

At the 2013 Little State Meet at Indiana Wesleyan University, Mallory Vandersaul picked up a point for USF in the pole vault competition. In the 5,000m run, Kelly Ditzler ran a great PR time of 21:47.0, while Mary Brokaw ran a new season best time of 5:39.7 in the 1,500m run. Also in the 1,5000m run, Lexi Heald ran 5:47.8.
