"Classes without Quizzes"

This is the sixth year for this exciting option during Homecoming, 3-4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21. Talented university faculty and staff will offer alumni and their spouses the opportunity to explore a variety of interesting topics. This is your chance to return to the classroom without quizzes or tuition fees! Classes and supplies are at no cost. To register for a class, call Maria Didier at 260-399-7700, ext. 6410 or email mdidier@sf.edu and specify the class you, your spouse, and/or friends are interested in attending. Here is the list of faculty and staff, with their exciting topics:

3-4 p.m.

A. A World of Art on Campus (Justin Johnson, BA ’99)

Justin Johnson, gallery director for the School of Creative Arts, will present highlights from the university galleries, including the John P. Weatherhead Gallery, Goldfish Gallery, Lupke Gallery, and Mimi and Ian Rolland Art Gallery. An introduction to upcoming exhibitions and events will also be discussed. The presentation will conclude with a review of highlights from the University Permanent Collection.

3-4 p.m.

B. Changing Jobs in Today’s Economy (Wendy Bodwell, Ph.D.)

This one-hour lecture will review the current national and local employment scene, including why job change may be necessary. Specific strategies for changing jobs will be discussed.

3-4 p.m.

C. Social Media (Dr. John Brinkman, Dr. Dan Torlone and Rebecca Coleman)

Just what is social media and which celebrities are followed? Come share exciting and innovative ways of communicating with friends and colleagues.

3-4 p.m.

D. Meditations in Stone: Michelangelo’s Pietas (Dr. Esperanca Camara)

Michelangelo’s Pieta, now in Saint Peter’s in Rome, is one of the most famous sculptures in Western art. Less well known is the Pieta he was carving for his own tomb. Michelangelo’s engagement with this theme encompasses his entire career. Just days before his death at the age of eighty-nine, he was working on yet another rendition of the subject. This lecture will examine how Michelangelo’s sculptures of the Pieta reflect his very personal meditations on Christ’s death and the promise of salvation.

The fashions represent a time of immense social change for women, as presented through women’s fashions of then-decadent styles and radical applications of creative movements.
