Fri., March
9, 2007JOHNSON CITY,
Tenn. -- University of Saint Francis senior Adam Longsworth
earned NAIA All-American status in the second day of the
NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships with his efforts
in the weight throw on Friday.
Longsworth finished fourth
in the weight throw with a top effort of 57 feet, 2 3/4
inches in his first attempt in the preliminaries and
shattered the record he set earlier this season at 54-4
(16.56 meters). The top six places in each event qualify
for All-America status.
Longsworth, an Elmhurst H.S.
grad, joins James Bettcher on the USF track and field
All-American list. Bettcher was an All-America in the shot
put and weight throw in 2001.
Heading into the
championships for the second year in a row, Longsworth had
the eighth best distance in the weight throw this season at
54-4 (16.56 meters) recorded in the DePauw Invitational on
Feb. 10. That effort broke the USF record of 54-9 1/4 set
by Tom Stirlen in 2004.
Longsworth finished
seventh in the shot put with a best throw of 53-8 1/4 on
Saturday (March 10). It was also his best throw in
competition this season. He was the No. 9 seed in the shot
put with a season best of 53-1 (16.19m) at the Anderson
Invitational.
Longworth is considered a junior when
outdoor competition begins.
In 2005-06, Longsworth did
not produce a qualifying effort in the weight throw. He
finished 14th in the shot put with a best effort of 50-9
1/2 in the preliminaries, his best effort in the 2005-06
indoor season.
