Hornstein qualifies for Indoor Nationals, Longsworth doubles fun

Sat., Feb. 25, 2006

ANDERSON, Ind. -- Alex Hornstein has qualified for the NAIA Indoor Championships for the first time in her career at the University of Saint Francis and Adam Longsworth qualified for his second event at the pinnacle of indoor track and field after competition in the Fred Wilt Memorial Invitational at Anderson University on Saturday, Feb. 25.

“Alex ran a PR in the 400 and just missed qualifying (for Nationals). She comes back not much later to run the 800 and runs a 5 second PR! That’s pretty amazing," USF head coach Sarah Thrall said. "She ran about as perfect a race as I’ve ever seen. She got out early to make sure she didn’t get boxed in, ran smart and had a great finish. I couldn’t be happier for her.”

Hornstein, a junior, placed second in the 800 in 2 minutes, 22.8 seconds in the final regular season indoor meet for the Cougars/Lady Cougars.

“It’s great to have Adam qualified in both his events. He’s one of the most dedicated athletes that I’ve ever been around, so for him to be going to Nationals in two events is definitely well deserved,” Thrall said.

Longsworth placed second in the shot put and the weight throw.

Hornstein and Longsworth will compete at the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships in Johnson City, Tenn., March 9-11.

“Our three guys we had in the mile (Jeremy, Jon and Justin) all ran really well and got PR’s," Thrall noted. "Jeremy’s time in the 800 was really nice. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in outdoor in that event.”

“Bart Williams had a huge improvement in the shot put and him placing second was huge for us,” Thrall said emphatically.

“Donovan Evans jumped well for us again as he has been all year and this was the first time he’s run the 55 dash. He almost tripped coming out of the blocks and even with his bad start he still ran a really decent time.”
