SAVANNAH, Ga. -- At the time, it was just
another run giving
the University of Saint Francis a 3-0 win heading into the
top of the seventh.
But
when the dust had cleared, Kaelan Poindexter's run turned
out to be the winning run in the Lady Cougars' 3-2 win over
NCAA Division II Chowan University (N.C.) on Thursday
morning.
Later
in the day USF (4-9) concluded its SCAD Smash Hit
Invitational adventure with a 10-2 loss to NCAA Division II
Kutztown University (PA). KU was ranked No. 12 in the NCAA
Pre-season Top 25 ranking and won the NCAA D II segment of
the invitational.
"Amber
did a good job of bearing down and getting final out, a fly
out," Bolyn related. "They had the tying run at second."
Rochelle Rehm singled to score Stacey Swinford and give USF
a 1-0 lead with one-out in the first inning. In the sixth
with two outs, USF added two crucial runs on a Whitney
Piercefield double and a Kyle Rosecrants single. Maira
Pizana scored on Piercefield's double and Poindexter scored
that all-important third run on Rosecrants single.
"That
would have been a tough loss to swallow considering Chowan
came into the game looking for its first win of the season,"
Bolyn said. "We didn't play all that well and were fortunate
to get the win. Overall for the week, we made a great deal
of progress."
Ludwig
fanned six and only walked one.
Kutztown (17-4) only led 3-2 after three innings, but added
two runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to end the game
after five innings and secure its eighth straight win.
Tiffany Steinbrunner started in the circle for USF and
absorbed the loss pitching four innings. Leigh Wells scored
both runs for USF scoring on a pair of Piercefield hits.
Ashley
Fitzgerald homered and drove in three runs for KU. The HR
was her third of the day including two in a 10-1 win over
Pikeville (KY) earlier on Thursday.
