Fort Wayne IN
-- Huntington University almost pulled off the
upset of the tournament as they fall to USF 3-2. The
Cougars controlled play and dominated the stat sheet but
could not put the Foresters away. Sophomore Hilary
Powers scored off a Mary Whisler shot with just 1 minute to
play in the first half.
USF
dominated the first 25 minutes of the second half and was
finally rewarded for their efforts. Freshman Rachel
Schenk scored her first collegiate goal after Megan Garrett
and Sara Thieme combined to free Schenk to goal. The
Two goal lead would only stand up for 1 minute as Huntington
answered with a shot that floated into the upper 90.
Both teams
battled hard and with 10 minutes remaining, Senior Laura
Leffers received a ball from Sara Thieme and beat the keeper
for her 10th goal of the season. Huntington would not
go away as Sara Kauffman responded with a goal just 11
seconds later. USF preserved the win and advance to
the MCC Semi-Finals on Wednesday at Spring Arbor University
(Ranked 11th in the NAIA).
"I
really thought we played well today and controlled the game.
Huntington deserves a ton of credit for their play and their
spirit not giving up after two 2 goal leads. Coach Nuber commented. "We
stayed composed and just played the game and that is why we
advanced".
The game
was also a milestone for Head Coach Ken Nuber as the win
gave him 200 in his 14 year career. Nuber has coached
the Women's team for 13 years and had coached men's team for
5 years. He has 168 wins as the Women's Coach and 32
as the Men's Coach. "I am very happy to share this
milestone with such a great group of players. It's a
nice honor but the ultimate goal is a conference
championship" Nuber stated.
The Cougars
advance to the MCC Semi-Finals on Wednesday
October 24th @ Spring Arbor University to face the 11th ranked
team in the nation at 2:00 pm.
