Spring Arbor, MI
-- USF went into hostile territory as they visited
the number 10th ranked team in the nation, on homecoming, on
Senior day, and trying to be the first team to defeat them.
It was not to be.
The MCC's
leading scorer Kayla Saylor scored her 17th of the season in
the 34th minute after a USF turnover in the back.
Saylor finally got a ball past senior Stacey Rider after she
watched Rider make 2 great saves.
The 1-0
half time lead was doubled in the 60th minute on a point
blank finish. USF would not go away though when junior
midfielder Mary Whisler headed home a corner kick by
freshman Katie Freygang with 15 minutes remaining. The
Cougars pressed Spring Arbor for the final quarter of an
hour but could not tie the game. The Cougars made
things interesting when senior Laura Leffers the cross bar
with a header off a corner and Freygang hit the cross bar with 2 minutes remaining
but USF could not get to the rebound. USF's goal broke
an amazing goalless streak by Spring Arbor that lasted over
790 minutes of play, almost 9 full matches.
"I was
proud of the way we fought today. Spring Arbor is an
excellent team and we gave them everything we had. We
are hoping to get a few players back from injury before the
post season tournament but we really battled today",
commented Coach Nuber.
The Lady
Cougars visit Indiana Tech Thursday night at 7:00 before
returning to MCC play on Saturday against Goshen @ 4:00.
