FORT
WAYNE, Ind. – That's more like it, at least from a
University of Saint Francis perspective.
Sixth-ranked USF defeated fledgling Marian College 57-7 on
Saturday afternoon at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium in the Cougars'
return home after three consecutive road games.
USF
(4-1, 1-1 MSFA MEL) scored on its four possessions and a
fifth on a 94-yard Paul Carter III interception return to
vault out to a 35-0 lead in the first 25 minutes of the
game.
Shaine Tierney made the most of his first collegiate start
at quarterback running for two touchdowns and throwing for
115 yards on 9-of-14 passing. Tierney scored on a 1-yard
sneak to put USF ahead 6-0 with 9:45 to play in the first
quarter and made it 13-0 on a 15-yard maneuver at the 6:50
mark in the first quarter.
After MC (0-5, 0-2 MSFA MEL) caught USF napping on a fake
punt to get the ball to the Cougars' 18, Carter stepped in
front of an Eldrin Jones pass at the USF 6 and dashed to the
end zone with a nifty fake around the MC 30-yard line that
got him free to score. It was Carter's fourth interception
for a touchdown, the third of 90 or more yards. He holds the
USF record with his 100-yard return at Walsy in 2005.
Freshman
Jordan Wise also got in at quarterback for USF and finished
11-for-17 passing for 117 yards including a 10-yard TD pass
to Jeremiah Wood. USF junior Jeff Wedding was held out with
an undisclosed injury.
Sophomore Daniel Carter led the USF running attack with 68
yards on seven carries. Carter scored twice on runs of 31
and 13 yards in the second quarter. Eric Rhodes led USF
receivers with 58 yards on three receptions.
In
the second half, Tim Farrell started the USF scoring when he
tackled Jones in the MC end zone for a safety. Wise hit Wood
for a TD, Zach Till scored when he plowed 5-yards in the
fourth quarter and Sam Daniels punched it in from 4 yards
out with 2:54 to play to finish the scoring.
MC
got its lone TD on a William Stubbs 2-yard plunge. Stubbs
led the Knights' rushing with 77 yards on 18 carries. Jones
finished 10-for-17 passing for 109 yards and the Carter
interception.
