Kurtz adds 2nd NAIA Defense Player of the Week honor

Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006

OLATHE, Kan.  – University of Saint Francis inside linebacker Brian Kurtz has been named NAIA National Defense Player of the Week for the second time this season for his play in the Cougars’ 21-20 win at Geneva College on Saturday, Nov. 11.

Kurtz, who on Monday was named Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Player of the Week for the fifth time this season, becomes the second player from USF to win the award twice in the same season. USF wide receiver Jeremy Dutcher was NAIA Offensive Player of the Week twice in 1999. USF QB Jeremy Hibbeln was selected once in 2000 and once in 2001. USF LB Jason Coriano won once in 1999 and once in 2001.

Kurtz and Dutcher are the only two players in MSFA history starting in 1995 to earn the honor twice in the same season.

Cougars, Kurtz had nine tackles, five solo, one pass broken up and the game-clinching interception at the USF 20 in the No. 1 Cougars’ 21-20 win at Geneva College on Nov. 11. He also made a block that helped fellow linebacker Dustin Westafer ramble for a 57-yard TD with a first quarter interception. And the Bishop Luers grad also caught a 4-yard game-tying TD pass from QB Eric Hooks in the fourth quarter against Geneva.

This is a USF best sixth time Kurtz, a 2006 Pre-season Victory Sports Network All-American and 2005 NAIA first-team All-American, has won the weekly conference tribute for his football career at USF.

The Cougars, who have won 51 consecutive regular season games, open NAIA Championship Series first round action on Saturday at Bishop D’Arcy Stadium at noon against No. 16 Walsh. USF defeated then No. 3 Walsh University on Nov. 4 21-7 for their 50th consecutive regular season win in a row. USF finished at No. 1 team in the NAIA Top 25, its third week in a row at No. 1.
